President appeals not to allow competitive campaigns to fuel discord

President Dr. Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik has appealed to the public not to allow competitive campaigns for the presidential elections to fuel discord among the people.

In his address to the people on the occasion of Eid al-Fitr today, President Waheed urged all parties to adhere to the principles of democracy and to show the world that the Maldives respects democratic principles.

The President also reaffirmed his commitment to ensure a free, fair and transparent election this year.

Addressing the nation, President Waheed said that Eid al-Fitr was an opportunity to improve relations with loved ones and renew commitments to strengthen them.

President also urged the people to strengthen their unity and solidarity by cooperating with each other and showing compassion to one another.

In his statement, President said that while a number of developmental projects were currently underway, support and cooperation of the people would boost progress of those projects. He added that successful completion of the projects would require cooperation between people and the concerned government authorities.

President Waheed and First Lady Madam Ilham Hussain also received a large number of people today to exchange greetings on the occasion of this year’s Eid al-Fitr. This reception took place this morning at Muleeaage.
