The police have arrested Mausoom Abbas, 24, of M. Hunaru, in his home today. Mausoom Abbas was sought in relation to a case of gang rape, where four men raped a 16-year-old girl after forcing her to drink alcohol in February this year.
The police had made announcements in search of Mausoom Abbas on three occasions.
He was arrested in his home which was checked under a court warrant during an operation conducted by Police Intelligence. The police also discovered half a kilo of illicit narcotics in his home.
A 23-year-old woman was also arrested in relation to this case, for obstructing the efforts by the police to take the suspect under arrest, said the police.
Speaking to reporters near Mausoom Abbas’s residence, Head of Family and Child Protection Department, Chief Inspector of Police Hassan Shifau said that the trial was under way against three suspects, of the gang rape case involving Mausoom Abbas.
He said that following Mausoom Abbas’s arrest, discussions will be held with the Prosecutor General’s (PG) Office regarding filing the case against him to court.
Regarding the case involving Mausoom Abbas, the police said earlier that four men were involved in the incident wherein a girl was intimidated and raped; and when the girl arrived at the police station, signs of forced sexual activity were visible on her body.
The police said that samples were taken from her clothes and other items as forensic evidence for analysis, and that the scene of the incident was also checked under a court warrant.
The police said that the suspects were found based on information provided by the victim, photos and other information; and that the DNA profiles determined from samples obtained from the victim’s body match the DNA of the suspects arrested in relation to this case.
