We are not in discussion with any party other than PPM about forming coalition: MDA

The Maldives Development Alliance (MDA) has said that they are not in discussion with any party other than the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) about forming a coalition.

This remark by MDA Deputy Leader Ali Mauroof came today, after some media groups reported that MDA was also in discussion with Jumhooree Party (JP) about forming a coalition.

Mauroof said that the discussions with PPM were initiated after MDA’s council decided to hold those discussions, and that MDA’s council has not decided to hold discussions with any other party about forming a coalition.

He said that the coalition discussions are being conducted in a diplomatic manner by a committee elected for this task, and that both MDA and PPM are making proposals and discussing various issues at the moment.

He said that he hoped that a decision can be reached in about three days.

Mauroof stressed that remarks made by one party member or council member do not necessarily reflect MDA’s stand on issues, rather, they are remarks made by those people as individuals.

The decision to hold discussions with PPM about forming a coalition for the upcoming presidential election was made during a meeting of MDA’s Council held on 2 August.
