Ministry of Economic Developments says that it has fined five shops in a month for breaching the regulations. The Ministry has noticed the shops in an inspection program.
According to the ministry the five shops have been fined for breaching the ‘regulation of buyers and service consumers’.
The ministry says that they have noticed that these shops have no proper label that has to be on packed foods, such as expiry date, etc.
The ministry has not revealed the names of the shops that are fined.
According to the ministry, they have inspected 26 shops, including super markets and various shops up to now.
Trade fair consultant in the Ministry Ms. Aishath Shahuma said that the shops were fined with MRF 500 for each item that does not meet with the regulations. And when the ministry re-checked in a week, most of the shops have made the corrections. The ministry did not give any detail about for how many items the shops have been fined.
‘The fine amount is MRf 500 for each item that does not meet the regulation, and MRf 5000 if the same is found in the second inspection.’ said Ms. Shahuma.
According to the ministry, the task of inspection is carried by Malé city council according to an agreement between the council and the ministry.
