Hypertension and diabetes patients to have access to treatment in their residential areas

The National Social Protection Agency (NSPA) has said that it has been decided to introduce a system that would allow patients with hypertension and diabetes to obtain treatment in their residential areas.

Chairman of NSPA Thorig Ali Luthfy said that the documents necessary to facilitate this system under Aasandha have been already prepared, and provided that relevant experts grant approval after they look through these documents, the service will be introduced on NSPA’s anniversary.

“With this change, the system applied to covering the cost of medical treatment for Maldivians would also see major changes. For the first time ever we will have fee-for-service, and this is the phase where we attempt to introduce a system whereby payments will be made under a defined policy, for a defined amount,” he said.

He said that discussions are ongoing to provide treatment for hypertension and diabetes under the new system from facilities that recognise Aasandha, for Maldivians obtaining this treatment abroad.
