The legitimacy of Jumhoory Party’s presidential candidate Gasim Ibrahim’s seat in the Judicial Service Commission has come into question.
Article 10 (d) of the Judicial Service Commission Act forces a commission member to be automatically expelled from his seat in an event where the member stands for a public office.
Prominent lawyer and former Attorney General Husnu- Al Suood said that the JSC Act’s Articles 5 and 10 contradict each other.
Lawyer Ali Hussain said that the Gasim has lost his eligibility to his JSC seat, as his presidential candidacy has already been approved by the Elections Commission.
Gasim has to be removed by the parliament itself and if not, the matter has to contested in court, Ali Hussain said.
In a recent parliament session, Maafannu-North MP Imthiyaz Fahmy condemned comments by Gasim, where Gasim had said that there was no truth behind the alleged sex video involving Supreme Court Judge Ali Hameed. MP Fahmy said that those were inappropriate statements for a JSC member to make and asked the parliament to look into the matter.
Although, a member of parliament has yet to question the legitimacy of Gaim’s seat in JSC with regard to him standing for the presidential elections.
