The new Government has begun a process of revising Boards of Directors of a plethora of public corporations created by former President Mohamed Nasheed. Managing Directors and Chairpersons of some of these corporations have already been dismissed.
An official from the President’s Office said today that ht process has been aimed at revising public corporations in order to manage them more effectively and efficiently, and that Boards of those corporations would be re-appointed.
Heads of corporations dismissed so far include Hassan Zahir, Chairman of State Electric Company Limited, Farooq Umar, Chairman of the State Trading Organization, Mohamed Shafeeq, Chiarman of the Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company, Hussain Nizar, Chairman of the Maldives Post Limited, Hussain Amr, Managing Director of the Maldives Transport and Communications Company, Adam “Sarangu” Manik, Chairman of the Maldives Road Corporation, Youshau Saeed, Chairman of Thilafushi Corporation, among others.
President’s Office also said that Chairpersons and Managing Directors of the Health Corporations and Utilities Companies formed by Nasheed’s government have all been dismissed.
The Official also confirmed that no new public corporations would be formed, and that none of the currently working ones would be wound up.
President Nasheed, who advocated privatization and a minimum government, formed a huge number of public corporations, and reportedly appointed, mostly, his party activists to manage these them, without much regard to their professional or academic qualification.
