Fire in Hudhuranfushi leaves 5 injured, 17 rooms destroyed

A fire in Hudhuranfushi has left 4 tourists and 1 Maldivian injured and 17 rooms rendered unusable.

Police said in a statement today that one Maldivian, one Brazilian and three Chinese tourists were injured during the incident, which occurred around 4:30 a.m. early this morning. The three Chinese nationals also include one 8 year old child, they said.

Their forensic team is currently trying to figure out the cause of the fire, police said.

All four tourists were transported to ADK hospital in the capital Male’. Police said that the Brazilian, the Chinese woman and the 8 year old child did not suffer major injuries. The Maldivian was treated in the nearby Thulusdhoo Hospital and soon released.

A man speaking on behalf of the resort told Sun that 17 rooms have been burnt down and rendered useless. He said that a estimate of the damages is yet unclear, but said that the resort in insured and that they will assess the damage along with the insurance company.

“They are waiting for the people from the insurance company to arrive. They will arrive shortly,” he said.

A witness in the nearby island of Kaafu Thulusdhoo, Ali Rizuvee said that he saw flames from the Hudhuranfushi as he was walking on the beach early this morning. Some water villas engulfed in smoke, he said.

Another witness from Thulusdhoo said that the fire had risen above the island, high up in the air.

Police said that the fire was controlled around 6:10 a.m. through a joint effort by resort staff, MNDF officers and the police.
