Dr Ibrahim Didi, Gemanafushi MP Ilham Ahmed, Transport Minister Ameen Ibrahim and Minister of State for Fisheries Dr Hussain Rasheed Hassan have been elected as deputy leaders of Jumhooree Party (JP).
Six candidates contested in the election for the post of deputy leader, and three additional candidates withdrew their names before voting took place at the party’s congress held at Dharubaaruge today.
A total of 94 members participated in the voting to elect a deputy leader, and Dr Didi received 80 votes, Ilham Ahmed 81 votes, Ameen Ibrahim 78 votes, and Hussain Rasheed 63 votes.
The unsuccessful candidates, Moosa Anwar and Abdullah Aman, received 38 and 12 votes respectively.
The members who withdrew their names were Minister of State for Fisheries and JP Council Member Fuad Gasim, JP Spokesperson Moosa Rameez and Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Ali Hameed.
As present leader of JP Gasim Ibrahim was the only candidate to put his name forward for the post of leader of JP, a vote was taken to determine if he should be elected for an additional term, in which he received 94 votes in favour.
At the congress, JP members also passed 34 out of 37 amendments proposed to the party’s Basic Regulation.
The concluding session of the congress will be held tonight at Dharubaaruge.
