Two suspects involved in Hassan Abubakr

The two suspects involved in the murder of Hassan Abubakr of Hiyfaseyhage, Noonu Maafaru, have been charged with terrorism.

They were earlier charged with deliberate murder, but these charges have been withdrawn.

The suspects are Ahmed Naushad of Galolhu Irufaa and Mohamed Faisal of Everlast, Laamu Isdhoo.

Presenting the claims at the trial in Criminal Court today, State lawyer Assistant Public Prosecutor Abdullah Rabiu said that Naushad, Faisal and a minor, on the night of 29 May 2012 at around 01:00, entered Hiyfaseyhage in Noonu Maafaru, and attacked Hassan Abubakr while he was sleeping.

Faisal covered Hassan Abubakr’s mouth with a t-shirt and his eyes with a pillow, while Naushad and the minor tied Hassan Abubakr’s hands with insulation tape.

These activities caused Hassan Abubakr’s death, said the State Prosecutor.

The suspects have been charged with terrorism with reference to Article 2 (a), under Article 6 (b) of the Terrorism Act.

Both suspects denied the claims in court today.

Faisal said that he did not need a lawyer to represent him, while Naushad requested for one week to appoint a lawyer.

Criminal Court Judge Ahmed Sameer Abdul Azeez said that the State would be given the opportunity to present evidence at the next session.

The State has charged the minor involved in the attack with deliberate murder, based on a confession statement given during the investigation.

The Juvenile Court has ruled that he is not guilty of the crime after he denied the claims and the investigation statement in court.
