Afrasheem murder suspect Humaam receives additional 3 years in prison

Criminal Court has sentenced Hussain Humaam Ahmed, H. Lobby to an additional 3 years in prison after being convicted of further drug offences.

Hussain Humaam has also been indicted for the murder of former Ungoofaaru MP Dr. Afrasheem Ali.

In addition to the four year sentence, Hussain Humaam currently carries a six-year prison sentence for drug offences for two different cases, and an additional one year sentence for refusing to provide urine samples to the authorities, to which he was sentenced on 28th of March this year.

Humaam's aggregate sentence now stands at a total of 10 years in prison.

Sentencing Humaam today, Criminal Court stated that Humaam had tested positive for Cannabis after being subjected to a urine test on 14th of July last year, after he was arrested in front of Artificial Beach around 2:45 a.m. Humaam had confessed in court that he was intoxicated at the time of the arrest, the Criminal Court said.

The state has also indicted him for assaulting a police officer, the court process for which is still ongoing.

Humaam had initially denied the charges for the intentional murder of parliamentarian Dr. Afrasheem Ali, after confessing to the murder in great detail during a previous hearing.

When asked why he had denied the murder charge earlier, Humaam said that he thought his family might be exposed to certain difficulties.

The State had said in court that Dr. Afrasheem’s DNA was found on Humaam’s person and his jeans.

When asked by the Judge to explain the incident in court during the hearing of the murder case on the 22nd of May this year, Humaam said that he had provided an explanation in the statement and requested that the statement be read in court.

In his statement, Humaam had said that Hulhu-Henveyru MP Reeko Moosa Manik’s son-in-law Abdullah Javid (Jaa) had promosed him MVR 4 million for the murder, that Jaa had told him that MP Moosa Manik planned the murder and that he was the person behind the funding.

“Jaa sat there and said, ‘You do know the its been plan? You’ve heard about this from Azleef Rauoof, haven’t you? So do you know how this is going to turn out, how much you’re going to get? I promise you, you will get four million rufiyaa if do this,' Jaa said to me. Also, (he said) that this was planned by parliament member Reeko Moosa Manik. That I will receive the money-bundle from Reeko Moosa Manik and that Reeko Moosa Manik is the one who is investing, Jaa said,” the statement, stamped by a clear fingerprint mark of Hussain Humaam Ahmed read.

The State Prosecutor had omitted the portion of Humaam’s statement when he read it out to the court. It was later leaked to the media.

Humaam said that he drank four bottles of alcohol mixed with Red Bull in Dolphin Café, 24 hours before the murder.

He said that they were not sure if Dr Afrasheem had died when they left him lying on the floor. He said that he went to Pet Park near H. Adipark with his accomplice, Ali Shaan and changed his clothes, right after committing the act. He was working under instructions from Ali Shaan, he said.

Humaam said that Azlif Raoof, an MNDF Officer who had played a part in recruiting Humaam, had told him over the phone, the route taken by Dr Afrasheem in his car after he attended a TVM program on the night of the murder. Humaam said that Azlif had told him one day prior to the night of the murder, how to go to Dr Afrasheem’s residence H. Funvilu.

Humaam said that the route taken by him and Ali Shaan to Dr Afrasheem’s residence to kill him, was Buruzu Magu near Family Court, and then a narrow lane on to Ameenee Magu.

He said that he, together with Ali Shaan, checked the area on Buruzu Magu and Ameenee Magu leading up to Dr Afrasheem’s residence before carrying out the murder.

Humaam said that after assigning the task of killing Dr Afrasheem, Azlif gave him a packet of drugs and told him to travel to Noonu Velidhoo to sell it. Humaam said that he spent MVR 2,000 which he had earned from playing Baibalaa to travel to Velidhoo, however could not sell the drugs.

Humaam had denied everything during the following hearing, on the 1st of June, and had asked for the chance to appoint an attorney. The court granted his request.

The court heard a confession against Humaam during hearing that followed.
