Vice Presidential candidate for President Waheed’s coalition, Ahmed Thasmeen Ali has said that even though he has paid the MVR 1.9 million he owed to Deputy Speaker Ahmed Nazim, the debt was not a legal binding debt.
The Leader of Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) made his remarks through a statement he released today, soon after the Civil Court said that Thasmeen had cleared the MVR 1.9 million by paying the amount to the court.
In his statement, Thasmeen said that the pending amount of MVR 1.9 he owed Ahmed Nazim was not a legally binding debt, and thus, he will continue to contest the case in Supreme Court, arguing that Nazim to have taken advantage of an agreement based on mutual understand.
Thasmeen took the case to Supreme Court after the Civil Court and High Court ruled in favour of Nazim.
Thasmeen’s lawyer Shaheem Ahmed had earlier stated that there “disconcerting points” regarding the High Court ruling.
Shaheem said that every individual has the right to appeal their High Court rulings in the Supreme Court within 90 days and that they had submitted the case to Supreme Court within the 90-day period.
In his statement today, Thasmeen said that Nazim and himself had a friendship dating back to their school years and that this mutual trust had led him to borrow the money without signing a legally binding agreement.
He said that the money was obtained to compensate for financial losses he had suffered in politics, and said that he was saddened that Nazim would try to take advantage of the political atmosphere and circumstance.
Concluding his statement, Thasmeen said that this incident of extending mutual trust and understanding has proved to be a crucial lesson in his life.
