President meets with Chief Justice and People

President Dr. Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik has today met with Chief Justice Ahmed Faaiz Hussain and Speaker of the People’s Majlis Abdullah Shaahid, the heads of Maldives Judiciary and Legislature respectively.

President Waheed, who was sworn in after the resignation of former President Mohamed Nasheed last Wednesday, met with the Chief Justice and the Speaker of the Majlis to discuss the smooth functioning of the state organs in accord with the Constitution.

Speaking to the Chief Justice, the President assured the former that the government would do nothing to interfere with the independence of the Judiciary. Former President Nasheed was heavily criticized inside the country, and also by international bodies and friendly countries, for trying to undermine the independence of the Maldives Judiciary, and it was Nasheed’s unconstitutional and unlawful actions against the Judiciary that caused the final downfall of Nasheed.

In his meeting with the Speaker of the Majlis, the President gave the latter details about the various steps and measures being taken by the government in order to re-establish peace and order in the country following days of discontentment and unrest. The President also told the Speaker that re-establishing peace and order in the country was his key priority at present.
