Members of Parliament have today called upon the Supreme Court judge to resign, if the allegations implicating him in the “sex video” are true.
Maafannu-North MP Imthiyaz Fahmy proposed an extraordinary motion at the parliament session today, stating that the law requires judges to be of implacable conduct and that the public should be able to hold their faith in sitting judges.
MP Imthiyaz said that reports of a “sex video” involving a judge of the Supreme Court is wildly circulating in the public and social media and noted in particular, a video showing a conversation between Supreme Court Judge Ali Hameed and Director of Golden Lane businesses Mohamed Saeed where, MP Imthiyaz said that, they were discussing “politics”.
MP Imthiyaz said that any sitting judge faced with such allegations should promptly resign and said that the validity of the incident has to be clearly ensured.
Speaking during the debate of the extraordinary motion, Thimarafushi MP Mohamed Shareef said that he does not believe that the matter should be debated in parliament.
He said that the parliament should not work in a fashion that might trample on an individual’s dignity. However, he said that he also believes that such a matter involving a sitting judge should be thoroughly investigated.
MP Shareef said that it must be clear to the public whether the judge had in fact behaved according to his allegations. He said that there are MPs amongst them in parliament, who are also suspected of having such video evidence against them.
The MPs who spoke during the debate of the extraordinary motion today all agreed that the “sex video” scandal of a sitting judge has to regarded as a serious issue. Some MP also asked the judge to resign, if the allegations held any truth.
