Cases have been forwarded to the Prosecutor General’s (PG) Office against former Home Minister Hassan Afeef and another person, accusing them of having misused funds belonging to Blue Lagoon Investment Private Limited.
The police said that the other man involved in this case is Moosa Hassan of M. Mathidhoo.
The police said that the two suspects are shareholders of Blue Lagoon Investment Private Limited, and they have been accused of deceitfully misusing part of the funds collected by Madoogali Resort and Spa, operated by Blue Lagoon, as service charge owed to its staff.
The police said that investigations had revealed that, under a policy created in violation of the Employment Act, 10 percent service charge was collected from a service provided by the resort from November 2011 to January 2013. Documents were created to state that no service charge was collected and deceive the staff, and the money collected as service charge was misused, informed the police.
The police said that shareholders in the management of the company also misused 29 percent of the funds collected as service charge from services provided between January and October 2012.
The police said that investigations had also revealed that Madoogali Resort was used as a mortgage, without the knowledge of one shareholder, to take a loan from a bank for the supposed purpose of repairing the resort, and this money was however used to pay rent for another resort, Noonu Raafushi, being developed by a company in which Hassan Afeef and Moosa Hassan hold shares, in violation of the terms of the Tourism Ministry regarding mortgaging resorts. The also police said that this loan is being repaid from an account under the name of Blue Lagoon Investment Private Limited.
