Mother jumps into sea with five-year-old child, rescued by civilian and police

A mother and her five-year-old child have been rescued by a civilian and the police after they jumped into the sea.

The police said that the incident took place at 22:04 tonight when the mother jumped into the sea with her five-year-old child behind Social Centre on Boduthakurufaanu Magu. They were rescued by a bystander and pulled out of the water with the assistance of the police.

The police said that the child was in good condition, but the woman was unconscious when pulled out of the water. She regained consciousness on the way to the hospital.

The police said that it is not yet known if the woman jumped in to the sea with her child to commit suicide.

The matter is under investigation by the police child protection department.
