More than 2000 members leave MDP

Recent statistics by the Elections Commission has revealed that more than 2000 members have left the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), the biggest political party in the country.

Numbers from the Elections Commission (EC) shows that the party had 45,666 members by 10th of March this year, which had dropped to 43,421 by 12th March 2013, a fall of 2,245 members.

The second largest party, Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), with a membership of 22,383 by 10th of March, had increased its membership to 22,660 by 12th of March, an addition of 227 members.

Adhaalath Party had a total of 10,562 members by 10th March, which had increased to 10,770, an addition of 208 members.

Dhivehi Qaumee Party (DQP) and Jumhoory Party (JP) had both lost members during the period.

According to the latest numbers by EC, DQP had 1,967 members by 10th March, which stood at 1,869 by 12th March, a reduction of 98 members.

JP lost 325 members, with 12,154 members on 10th March and 11,829 members on the 12th of March.

Gaumee Ithihad Party (GIP) and Maldives Development Alliance (MDA) had both gained members, but had failed to reach the 10,000-member mark.

GIP membership stood at 3,930 at 10th March and had increased to 2,156 by 12th March.

MDA had a significant gain in members, with 3,349 member on the 10th and 7,904 by 12th or March 2013, an increase of 4,555 members.
