The Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA) has notified the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) to freeze all accounts of private airline Mega Maldives.
Director General Audit and Finance of MIRA, Fathullah Jameel said that MMA was notified last Thursday to freeze all accounts of Mega Maldives, after the airline failed to pay a large sum of money for an audit.
“MMA will notify all banks to freeze the accounts of this airline. We have been trying to get the money they owe us, and the notification to freeze the accounts was sent because those efforts were unsuccessful. We assume the accounts have been frozen now,” he said.
The amount of money owed by Mega Maldives has not yet been revealed.
Meanwhile, their flights were also grounded today because they had failed to pay about $1 million to Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL).
MACL said that the flight scheduled for 17:10 today had not been allowed to depart.
“Even the flight that was supposed to depart today, will only be allowed to depart after they pay us 50 percent of the money,” said an official of MACL.
Mega Maldives conducts charter flights to China and Hong Kong.
