Commissioner of Police Abdulla Riyaz has requested the Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM) and Police Integrity Commission to closely monitor the conditions of the people who are arrested and under investigation by the Police following the violence last Wednesday.
In addition to the violence in Male’, fire was set to Addu Police Training School and several Police Stations in several islands.
A statement by the Commissioner of Police today says that the Police have been advised to allow the arrested people to exercise their rights as guaranteed by the law, such as the right to a lawyer as well as basic human rights such as food and water.
The Commissioner assures Maldivian people that the arrested people will be dealt with within the limits of the law, and with respect to their rights as guaranteed by the law.
