The State Trading Organisation (STO) has collected 20 sacks of garbage near the reef in Male’ in the ‘Nippon Paint Marine Coatings Reef Cleaning’ carried out today.
The program was initiated by the STO Staff Club on the occasion of World Environment Day.
The staff of STO cleaned an area covering about 20,000 sq ft in about one and a half hours. The program was carried out with the assistance of Maldives National Defence Force and the Dive Club.
Speaking at a ceremony held near the market area to distribute certificates to the staff who participated in the program, STO General Manager Sales and Marketing Adam Azim said that this program is the beginning of more activities related to social responsibility and protecting the sea of the Maldives.
Azim said that in order to ensure that the beautiful environment of the Maldives is sustained for future generations, we have to stop littering the sea with garbage such as tyres and metal objects. He said that STO will carry out similar programs in collaboration with large organisations in the future as well.
