President Dr Mohamed Waheed has said that efforts are ongoing to draw up a Food Security Strategy in the Maldives.
The president said this in his statement on the occasion of World Environment Day.
He said that it is the responsibility of the government to ensure sustainable provision of food to the people, thus, efforts are under way to draw up a Food Security Strategy.
He highlighted that the Food Security Strategy will include ways to increase productivity of agriculture and fisheries sectors, and ways to strengthen and improve methods of production and consumption of food in a manner that is beneficial to people’s health.
The president said that the problem of waste management is the most dangerous and financially challenging problem faced by the vulnerable environment of the Maldives, and noted that the implementation of the waste management policies adopted by the government is under way in various regions of the Maldives.
The president’s statement was delivered by Minister of Environment Dr Mariyam Shakeela, at the official ceremony held by Environment Ministry to mark World Environment Day today.
A regulation on waste management, a motor vehicle emission standard, and a waste management plan for 13 islands in Baa Atoll were introduced at today’s ceremony.
World Environment Day is marked on 5 June every year. This year’s theme for World Environment Day is ‘Think. Eat. Save’.
