India prepared to cooperate with new government in development and security efforts

Prime Minister of India Dr Manmohan Singh has said that his government is prepared to cooperate with the new government of the Maldives.

An article on The Indian Express said that the Prime Minister noted that “the two countries share a common destiny and have common security interests”, and told Mr. Waheed that “India is committed to working with you and the Government in Maldives to further enhance our close, bilateral cooperation to mutual benefit and for the continued security, progress and prosperity of our two countries.”

The article reported that President Dr Waheed contacted the Prime Minister of India Manmohan Singh via telephone within 24 hours of officially assuming his post as Maldivian President.

The article on The Indian Express said that the relations between Maldives and India are of great interest to India, because of the attention paid by China to small island nations. India has been monitoring the protests in the Maldives, especially since people of extremist views play a big part in the unrest.

The article cited a statement by the Ministry of External Affairs of India and said that during his phone call, President Dr Waheed assured that the good relations between Maldives and India will persist, and that his government will uphold the country’s constitution and respect the laws.

Before the telephone conversation between Indian Prime Minister Singh and President Dr Waheed, a letter was sent by Prime Minister Singh to Dr Waheed where he indicated that India is prepared to collaborate and work towards the development and security of both countries.
