Presidential Candidate of Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) has called on the Prosecutor General’s (PG) Office to expedite filing criminal cases to court, after they are sent to the PG Office by the police.
Yameen said this while speaking at a rally last night.
Yameen said that the courts must also ensure that the cases are attended to as soon as possible after they are received from the PG Office.
He said that several judges have been attending seminars abroad lately, and instead, they should be prioritising completing trials.
Yameen also referred to the delay in the trial against former President Mohamed Nasheed.
He said that the procedural issues must be set aside, and the court should expedite and complete the trial. He added that people who ‘do wrong’ must be penalised.
At last night’s rally, PPM Vice President Ahmed Adheeb, Vilimaafannu MP Ahmed Nihan, Galolhu-South MP Ahmed Mahloof and PPM Council Member Mohamed Waheed Ibrahim also expressed concern over the increase in crime in the Maldives.
