The lawyer of Dr Mohamed Jameel Ahmed has raised a procedural issue in court, stating the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) cannot press charges against Dr Jameel claiming that he influenced the courts while holding the post of Minister of Home Affairs, in relation to the case filed by the State against former President Mohamed Nasheed on the arrest of Chief Judge of Criminal Court Abdullah Mohamed.
Dr Jameel’s lawyer Zaid Ahmed said at the trial in Civil Court today, that MDP does not have the legal capacity to have filed a case in this regard.
MDP has said that the case is directly related to the party, and that it could result in the party suffering damage.
Dr Jameel’s lawyer said that the issues highlighted by MDP in their claims hold no legal credibility, and such a case can only be filed by Nasheed.
MDP’s lawyer said that Nasheed is the presidential candidate of MDP, which means that these charges can be pressed by MDP.
The judge concluded today’s session after announcing that the court will make a decision on the procedural issues at the next session of the trial.
