MTCC slows down harbour construction projects due to shortage in reinforcement boulders

Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has said that the company‘s harbour development projects have been slowed down due to the unavailability of reinforcement boulders.

MTCC's Senior Public Relations Officer Mariyam Suhana told Sun today that the company’s harbour projects in Noonu Manadhoo, Raa Ungoofaaru, Shaivyani Komandoo, Faafu Feeali, and Meemu Mulaku have now been slowed down. She said that the company is finding it difficult due to the unavailability of large reinforcement boulders.

“We have not stopped the harbour construction projects, but we have slowed them down due to unavailability of boulder stones. We are facing great difficulties due to the unavailability of boulder stones,” Suhana said.

She said that the company is currently speaking with a number of parties to obtain the reinforcement boulders but said that their efforts so far have been futile. She said that they have not been able to obtain the boulder from India and that the product is much expensive from other countries.

Suhana said that the company’s stock for the product is dwindling and that they cannot predict a date as to when they can bring in new stock.

The State Trading Organiztion (STO) has been trying to obtain the aggreate from Bangladesh and Sri Lanka after India has ceased its export of the product. However, STO had recently imported a 8,000 ton shipment of aggregate from Dubai.
