Still have not received report on theft of MVR 200,000 from motorcycle seat compartment: PG Office

The Prosecutor General’s (PG) Office has said that the appeal of the ruling, whereby the suspects involved in stealing over MVR 200,000 from the storage compartment under the seat of a motorcycle parked near M. Champaa Heaven were acquitted, is being delayed because the PG Office had still not received the report related to the trial of this case.

The Criminal Court acquitted Ahmed Areesh, Aafir Mohamed and Wafir Mohamed on 13 March 2013, of theft charges pressed against them by the State.

Media Official of the PG Office Hussain Nashid said that a letter requesting for the report had been sent to the Criminal Court on 18 March 2013, but to this date, the report had not been received.

He said that the case will be appealed as soon as the report is received.

The money was stolen at around 13:30 on 17 March 2012.

Criminal Court said in its ruling that the nature of the items stolen from the storage compartment under the seat of the motorcycle was unclear, and the storage compartment under the seat of a motorcycle is not a safe place to store valuable items.

The court said that the State, besides saying that MVR 200,460 had been stored in the compartment, had not presented any evidence to prove that this money had in fact been stored in the compartment.
