Farmers in Gaafu Dhaalu Gadhdhoo face damages due to recent extreme weather

The farmers in Gaafu Dhaalu Gadhdhoo have faced huge losses due to the extreme weather currently effecting the Maldives.

The farmlands in the uninhabited island of Gaadu Dhaalu Gan, farmed by famers from Gaafu Dhaalu Gadhdhoo, have suffered excessive damages due to heavy rain and hard winds.

President of Gaafu Dhaalu Gadhdhoo Council Mohamed Rizaan told Sun today that heavy rains during the past two weeks has caused the farmlands in Gaafu Dhaalu Gan to flood and that the yam, vegetable and watermelon crops have been badly damaged. Rizaan said that some of the plots have to be cleared and sowed again.

“Some of the farmer’s watermelon, pumpkin, chili, cucumber, bananas, different types of vegetables and fruit farms now require complete clearing and have to be sowed again. Some of the racks and cages and nets that were used on the farms have all been blown away by the wind.”

Rizaan said that the council is now in the process of assessing the damages to the farms.

“The council is currently working on assessing the damages, listing and calculate the cost in damages,” Rizaan said.

The Councilor also said that entrance to Gaafu Dhaalu Gadhdhoo harbour was also damaged during the recent harsh weather.
