Parents assault foreign teacher for allegedly hitting a student

Commotion broke out in Haa Dhaalu Kumundhoo yesterday as parents assaulted a foreign teacher after accusing the teacher of hitting one of the students.

Vice President of the Kumundhoo Council Ali Anwar said today a grade 8 student was taken to the island’s medical centre yesterday for experiencing breathing difficulties after his physics teacher had allegedly hit the student.

Anwar said that after the incident, a large crowd of parents gathered near the school in protest and that the physics teacher had received head injuries during an assault that ensued.

The teacher was then taken to Haa Dhaalu Kulhudhuffushi Regional Hospital to be treated for injuries. Details of the injuries could not be clarified from the regional hospital.

About 300 students study in the Haa Dhaalu Kumundhoo School.

Council Vice President Anwar said that complaints of the teacher hitting children have been heard in the past. He he couldn’t yet say what caused yesterday’s incident, Anwar said.

Anwar said that he is not yet aware whether any arrests have been made in relation to the incident.
