Government decides to provide assistance to islands damaged by extreme weather

Government has decided to provide emergency support funds to islands in the south that have suffered the maximum damage due to the extreme weather currently afflicting the southern regions of the country.

Government has also facilitated emergency rations through the State Trading Organization Plc (STO) to the most affected islands, after regular transportation and supply networks were disrupted due to heavy rains and rough seas.

President’s Office revealed that the assistance would be provided through the contingency budget of the Ministry of Finance and Treasury.

President’s Office said that the President Dr. Mohamed Waheed has met with officials from the Maldives Police Service, the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF), and the National Disaster Management Centre (NDMC), regarding the damages being caused in the Southern regions of the country.

During the meeting, the President was briefed on the counter measures being taken by the authorities in providing assistance to the islands where sewerage systems have been disrupted due to heavy flooding and the efforts being undertaken to drain the flood water, currently being carried out by government authorities with the collaboration of island communities.

President Waheed assured that the government would provide all the assistance and support needed.
