Minister of Education Dr Asim Ahmed has said that seventeen schools in the Maldives will commence A level classes this year.
Speaking at a ceremony held today to hand over items donated by the Japanese government to the education sector of the Maldives to senior officials of schools, Dr Asim said that two schools in Male’ and fifteen schools in the atolls will begin A level classes this year.
Referring to the change by several schools to one session instead of two sessions per day, Dr Asim said that up till now, 120 schools had changed to one session, and no additional schools will make this change this year due to lack of space.
He said that as part of the efforts to address the problem of lack of space, the construction of a school for 1,200 students in Hulhumale’ will commence this year. He said that the cost of the project will be borne by the Housing Development Corporation.
In addition, he said that discussions were under way with the Housing Ministry to construct a new school in Male’.
The items donated by the Japanese government include a multimedia projector for every school and first aid equipment.
