Fisheries Minister appointed acting Minister of Home Affairs

President Dr. Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik has appointed Minister of Fisheries and Agriculture Ahmed Shafeeu as the acting Minister of Home Affairs.

President’s Office has confirmed Shafeeu’s appointment.

Dr. Mohamed Jameel Ahmed has also confirmed that he has been dismissed from the position of Minister of Home Affairs today.

Dr. Jameel, who was dismissed for accepting to be the running mate for PPM's presidential candidate, was advised by the government not to accept the offer.

Since the president himself would be running for office, it would create a conflict of interest to have a member of his cabinet as his rival candidate or rival candidate’s running mate, the government had said previously.

A senior official from the government has described the two offices of the Minister of Defence and the Miniter of Home Affairs as distinct from other cabinet posts, as the people holding these positions should be unquestionable loyalty to the President.
