Police have advised the public to be mindful of their mobile phones in light of a recent increase in mobile phone thefts.
Police said today that one of the most common crimes in the Maldives is theft and that robberies from homes, robberies of vehicles and mobile phones, are the most common crimes reported to the police.
They highlighted uneasiness in the society due to the increased number of mobile phone thefts.
Police said that an average of 6 to 7 petty thefts are reported to them daily, and that such crimes were possible because the public do not take enough care to take the proper precautions.
They said that leaving your mobile phone unattended in the sitting room is an invitation for the thief to commit the crime.
Police said that one of the steps the public can take to prevent mobile phone thefts is to be cautious when using them in public and reduce the use of mobile phones in public places. It is important for to take note of the movements of the people around you while using the mobile phone in public, and to keep your answers short on the phone, while you are in the public, said the police.
The law enforcement service said that mobile phone thefts can be dangerous crimes and that mobile phones have to be carefully protected as they contain a lot of personal information. They also noted the present applications and software allow the users to locate them if they are lost or stole, and advises the public to make use of such softwares and applications and be vigilant at all times.
While police have included thefts in their priorities, the number of thefts in have increased in the Maldives during the past two years.
