A Fisherman’s Community Centre to provide information on the location of bait and schools of fish has been established in Laamu atoll.
The centre was established in Laamu Gan by Maldives Fisherman’s Association in cooperation with Maizan Electronics.
It was inaugurated by Fisheries Minister Ahmed Shafeeu in a ceremony held in Gan last Wednesday morning.
In an interview, Chairman of Fisherman’s Association Maizan Ahmed Manik told Sun Online that the centre would help reduce fuel cost for fishermen.
He said that the information obtained via satellite will be provided to fishermen at a fee of MVR 116.66 per day or MVR 3,500 per month.
Maizan Ahmed Manik said that a similar centre will also be established in the island with the most fishermen in Huvadhu Atoll in the near future.
He said that the centre will work towards finding solutions to challenges faced by Maldivian fishing boats that travel to zones outside the Maldives. The centre plans to provide training programs on a permanent basis for those vessels, he said.
