Coast Guard rescues people onboard boat that sank near Gaafaru

Maldives Coast Guard has rescued the people onboard Riveli fishing boat that sank off Gaafaru in Male’ Atoll.

Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) Media Officer Abdulla Ali said today that they commenced search and rescue efforts yesterday and that the boat was found this morning. He said that the 5 people onboard the boat were found floating inside the Gaafaru lagoon with the aid of their life jackets.

MNDF said that boat has been badly wrecked and that it had sunk on top of the reef.

Four of the five people are currently en route to Male’, MNDF said, and that one of the people was in need of medical attention.
