Maldives Development Alliance (MDA) candidate for the Noonu Kendhikulhudhoo Island Council by-election Ahmed Rizleen has won the seat by a large margin, after defeating his Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) opponent.
MDA’s candidate won by 64 percent vote, during the voting conducted today. His opponent, who represented the country’s largest political party, received 34 percent of the votes.
Candidate from MDA won 200 votes from Kendhikolhu ward, 224 from Kulhudhoo ward, and 27 votes from Male’, in contrast to his MDP opponent who won 124 votes from Kendhikolhu ward, 90 votes from Kulhudhoo ward and 28 votes from Male’.
Speaking at a campaign event for Rizleen in Kendhikulhudhoo last Thursday, MDA’s Leader Ahmed Siyam Mohamed had confidently assured the people that the party will win the by-election.
“Kendhikolhudhoo by-election is the first election we compete, in the history of this party. Regardless of how big you say MDP is, if the people of Kendhikolhudhoo are so, with the grace of God, we will defeat MDP by a vast majority during this by-election,” Leader of MDA Ahmed Siyam said.
