Torture Victims Association has requested President Nasheed to work for justice for citizens who are tortured in prison.
The President’s Office said that this request was made during a meeting between President Nasheed and the Torture Victims Association Board Member Aminath Najeeb.
The President’s Office also said that the Association had conducted interviews with 100 torture victims, who shared their experiences with the Association. According to Aminath Najeeb, the Association is working for justice for these individuals as per their requests.
Aminath Najeeb also said that 25 such cases have been submitted to the Human Rights Commission, and that they plan to make similar efforts in the future.
The Association informed President Nasheed of their past and current efforts to help torture victims.
The President’s Office said that during today’s meeting, the President indicated that a large number of Maldivians were tortured in the past thirty years. He said that this was a result of the inefficient judicial system existing at that time, and that the government is currently making efforts to assist the Human Rights Commission, and working towards obtaining justice for these victims.
The President also said that he has not exercised his authority in this regard thus far, but that he will do everything in his power to reinstate justice for Maldivian people.
