Investigations completed on all murders of 2012, cases sent to PG

The police have said that they have completed investigations on all murders reported in 2012, and sent the cases to the Prosecutor General’s (PG) Office.

In a video posted by the police on murders of 2012, Head of Serious and Organised Crime Mohamed Dhaaoodh said that all murder cases of 2012 have been filed to court, and that some people have been sentenced in relation to these crimes.

He said that while the cases are ongoing in court, some groups try to influence the people who provide witness statements, and that the police will try to identify those people and do everything possible to bring them to justice.

The first murder that took place last year was that of Ali Hussain of Samandharu, Kudahuvadhoo, who was found murdered in an abandoned house in Dhaalu Kudahuvadhoo on 8 January 2012. Cases have been filed to court against six suspects including three minors. The court has delivered verdicts on some of them.

The second murder was that of Abdul Muheeth, 21, of Veyru, who was found stabbed on 19 February 2012. Muheeth died while being treated in the hospital. He was attacked by a group in a cul-de-sac near Finance Ministry. Three minors were arrested on suspicion of this crime, and the case has been filed to court.

The third murder of 2012 was that of Ali Shifan, 29, of Fairy Corner, who was stabbed near West Park on the evening of 1 April 2012. Six arrests were made following this attack. The Criminal Court has acquitted all six suspects, and the case has been appealed in the High Court by the police.

The fourth murder was that of Mohamed Arham, 16, of Nooreege, Haa Alif Hoarafushi, who was found murdered on the morning of 30 May 2012 in a park behind Kulliyyaa. Cases against six suspects have been filed to Criminal Court.

Hassan Abubakr, 66, of Hiyfaseyhage, Noonu Maafaru, was murdered on 30 May 2012. The police arrested three suspects, and the cases have been filed to court.

The sixth murder of 2012 was that of lawyer Ahmed Najeeb, 65, who was found murdered in a room in Masrooraage. The police made three arrests, and two convicts have been sentenced to death in relation to this crime.

Lance Corporal Adam Haleem, 27, of Kethi, Kaafu Kaashidhoo, was also murdered last year. He was stabbed to death on the night of 23 July 2012. The suspect arrested by the police has been convicted and given the death sentence.

The eighth murder of 2012 was that of Ungoofaaru MP Dr Afraasheem Ali, who was found stabbed to death on the night of 1 October 2012 in Funvilu. The police arrested 11 suspects including three minors. The trial is currently in progress.

The ninth murder was that of Muneerul Islam, a Bangladeshi citizen, who was found murdered in a house on Chaandhanee Magu in November 2012. Three suspects were arrested, and one suspect has confessed during investigations to having murdered Muneerul Islam. The case has been filed to court.
