Department of Immigration and Emigration has decided to delegate the collection of about MVR 4 million owed to the department as fines and other similar fees, to the Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA).
Controller of Immigration Dr. Mohamed Ali told Sun today that government institutions alone owe the department MVR 3.6 million for the past three years. He said that individual parties also owe the department approximately MVR 300,000.
He said that starting from the month of May, MIRA would be responsible for seeking all the amounts payable to the department, including the claims sought through courts.
“MIRA has become our partner. Starting from this month, all the money owed to the department will be collected by MIRA, including money sought through trails,” Dr. Mohamed Ali said.
Controller of Immigration also said the department is also working to set up a SMS or hotline system to ease communications between the public and the department.
He said that the new system will allow the public to clarify information regarding the work of the different sections in the department, in addition to filing complaints through SMS. The systems will be setup within the following week, the Controller said.
