New UN Resident Coordinator presents credentials to the President

The new United Nations Resident Coordinator to the Maldives Mr Anthony E. Lisle has presented his credentials to President Dr Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik.

Speaking at the meeting held at the President’s Office yesterday, President Waheed congratulated Mr Lisle and welcomed him to the Maldives.

President Waheed underlined the difficult fiscal situation of the country, and informed the Resident Coordinator of the revenue bills that have been submitted for Parliament’s approval. He expressed confidence of continued UN support for the Maldives in strengthening democracy in the Maldives.

At the meeting, Mr Lisle commended the tremendous progress made by the Maldives in many areas. However, noting that there still remain areas that require development, Mr Lisle assured President Waheed of UN support for the Maldives during his term.

The Resident Coordinator said that sustainable development is not possible without smoothing the democratic process, and spoke of the importance of maintaining peace during the elections. He also expressed his optimism that the Maldives will find solutions to its own problems.
