By the time MDP's term is over, not a single jobless person will remain in Addu City: former president Nasheed

Presidential candidate for the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and former President Mohamed Nasheed has said that there will not be single unemployed person living in Addu City by the time MDP’s term of government comes to an end.

Speaking at a MDP campaign event in Hithadhoo, Addu City last night, the former president guaranteed that a MDP government will double the city’s productivity within a five year period.

“I've told you repeatedly, we will increase the productivity of this city by two folds within five years. There will not be a single person without a job in this city, God willing,” said Nasheed.

The former president’s focus last night was on the development of Addu City and the strategies of a MDP government to improve the economy.

He said that turning the Gan Airport into an international airport is a priority for them, which will soon be accomplished. He assured that MDP will implement its policy on bringing more international flights to Gan Airport.

“We have to make Gan Airport an international airport. God willing, we will achieve this very soon. We will implement the policy to land international flights to this international airport once again,” said Nasheed.

He said that MDP already has a policy of developing tourist resorts and hotels of 3000 beds in Addu City and that they will ensure that the city sees a constant flow of tourists from around the world. He said that it is not impossible for MDP to make it a developed city.

Concluding his statements, Nasheed said Addu City is the garden (gulzaaru) mentioned in one of their theme songs “gulzaaruga naya magey” (my dear garden). He said that can imagine the garden, that he knows the garden well, and that he is quite certain that Addu in fact, is the right garden.

Last night’s event saw the participation of large number of MDP supporters and some of the leaders of the party, including one of its new members to the top brass, Speaker of the Parliament Abdulla Shahid, and some members of the parliament.
