Was not of sound mind when I requested for a state lawyer: Humaam

One of the persons indicted for the murder of former Ungoofaaru MP Dr. Afrasheem Ali, Hussain Humaam Ahmed of H. Lobby has said that he was not of sound mind when he requested the state to appoint a lawyer for his defence.

Speaking in court during his second hearing for the murder of Dr. Afrasheem Ali, Humaam said that he wants to appoint a lawyer himself and that he will continue the trial without legal representation if he fails to appoint a lawyer within the time allowed by the court.

The judge allowed 10 days for Humaam to employ a lawyer.

During the first hearing, Humaam had told the court that he wishes for the state to appoint a lawyer on his behalf, who however, had not attended today’s hearing.

Humaam is being charged for murdering Dr. Afrasheem Ali on the 1st of October 2012 between 11:30pm and 2:00am at Afrasheem’s residence H. Funvilu, by attacking him with a sharp object, assisted by a group of others.

Police have said that Humaam received assistance from Ali Shaan of H. Hicoast, and that a had minor stood guard outside Afrasheem’s residence at the time of the murder.

The trial against Ali Shaan of H. Hicoast, the second person indicted for the murder of Dr Afrasheem Ali, commenced yesterday.

The judge concluded Shaan's trial yesterday by granting him the opportunity to appoint his own lawyer.
