Four shops in Malé, three of them belonging to three prominent opposition leaders and one to an opposition activist, were vandalized last night by hooligans whose identity has not officially being announced.
Hassan Haneef, Police Media Official, said today that Red Wave Plaza at Sayyid Ali Kilegefaanu Magu, My Wardrobe at Buruzu Magu, Shoe King at Majeedee Magu, and Jeans at Carnival Area were the shops that were attacked last night. Of these, Red Wave Plaza is owned by MP and opposition leader Ahmed Saleem, while My Wardrobe is owned by MP and Deputy Leader of main opposition Divehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) Ibrahim Shareef. Jeans is owned by Ahmed Mahloof, MP and prominent leader of opposition Progressive Party of the Maldives (PPM), while Shoe King is owned by a famous opposition activist.
According to the police, display windows of these shops were broken by the attackers. The attacks apparently occurred at various times during the night.
Similar attacks have occurred before. Mahloof’s Jeans has been struck the second time in three months.
The Maldives Police Service said that they had begun to intensify patrols in Malé as vandalizing property belonging to people and the Government is becoming commonplace.
