It is India's objective to further improve relations with the Maldives: new Indian High Commission

The new Indian High Commissioner to the Maldives Shri Rajeev Shahare has said that the Indian government will work to further improve the long standing relations between the two countries.

Speaking at a dinner function held last night to mark the visit of the two Indian Naval Ships, ICGS Varuna and INS Sujata from the First Training Squadron to the Maldives, High Commissioner Shahare said that Maldives and India share a number of things in common, especially in terms of culture, language and tradition.

Speaking at this first public appearance after assuming office as High Commission, Rajeev Shahare said that it has always been an objective of the Indian government to improve relations with the Maldives, and said that he will prioritize to maintain and improve the relationship between the two countries during his tenure as the High Commissioner.

Before taking up as the Indian High Commissioner to the Maldives, Rajeev Shahare held the position of Joint Secretary in the Indian Ministry of External Affairs.

Last night’s dinner hosted on one of the Indian Naval Ships was attended by the Maldivian Defence Minister Colonel (Rtd) Mohamed Nazim, other government Ministers, diplomats, and high ranking officers from the Maldives military.

The event also saw the hand over gym equipment donated from the Indian government to the government of Maldives, in addition to some spare parts for the helicopter ‘Rehendhi’, also a contribution from the Indian government.
