The United Nations has called for accelerated action to reach the anti-poverty targets known as the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) by their deadline at the end of 2015.
The call from the United Nations came on the 1,000 day countdown to the designated deadline to accomplish the goals by the end of 2015.
UN in the Maldives released a statement yesterday stating that they will observe, along with governments, international organizations and civil society groups around the world, the 1,000-day mark to the 2015 target date for the Millennium Development Goals.
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said from Madrid that; “The MDGs are the most successful global anti-poverty push in history,” during the ceremony held to formally kick off the campaign tagged “MDG Momentum – 1,000 Days of Action.”
The eight time-bound Millennium Development Goals address poverty and hunger, education, gender equality, child mortality, maternal health, combating AIDS, malaria and other diseases, environmental sustainability and a global partnership for development.
The Millennium Development Goals were adopted by all UN Member States in the year 2000.
