Di Canio: I am not a supporter of fascism

SUNDERLAND, England (AP) — Sunderland manager Paolo Di Canio says he is not a supporter of fascism and has been hurt by the "vicious and personal accusations" leveled at him since his appointment on Sunday.

The Italian has been forced to issue another statement about his political beliefs after an outcry over comments and actions earlier in his career, which suggested he had openly fascist leanings.

Di Canio says "I am not political, I do not affiliate myself to any organization, I am not a racist and I do not support the ideology of fascism. I respect everyone."

He adds Wednesday that he has been "deeply hurt by the attacks" on the club.

The saga blew up when Sunderland vice chairman David Miliband — a former British Foreign Secretary — responded to Di Canio's hiring by quitting his role with the club.
