Presidential Candidate of Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) Abdullah Yameen has said that several allegations have been made against him recently by people within the party and as well as outside, and that they are all false allegations and lies that cannot be proved.
Speaking at a rally held at Carnival area last night, Yameen said that he is not a wealthy person who owns flats abroad, or someone who controls control gangs or trades drugs; and assured that he would not have pledged to serve the people if he happened to be involved in any such activities.
“You should only trust me if you know who I am. Numerous allegations have been made against me. But I swear to god, none of those things can be proved. I’m not a wealthy person. I don’t own flats abroad. I don’t control gangs. I don’t trade drugs. I am not even slightly connected to Afrasheem’s murder,” he said.
These remarks by Yameen came after his rival Umar Naseer, who recently lost the PPM Primary Election to Yameen, accused him of having connections with drug trafficking gangs.
Yameen urged everyone to refrain from making up such baseless stories for the sake of peace and order within the party.
At last night’s rally, Yameen also called on Umar Naseer to join him, and said that Umar has played a significant role in making PPM a strong and united party.
“Umar plays a significant role in our efforts towards the solidarity of this party. Thus, I sincerely call on Umar and his team to join us,” he said.
Yameen also reiterated his invitation to other political parties to join PPM, and said that PPM will have its doors open at all times to all parties that wish to join them.
Last night’s rally was attended by a large number of PPM supporters and members, including some senior members of Team Umar.
