ADK Hospital has established a neuro-monitoring system that enables real-time monitoring of nervous system functions during surgical procedures.

Speaking at a ceremony held by ADK Hospital on Monday night, Consultant Neurosurgeon Dr. Mohamed Zaidhan Adil explained that patients must be administered anaesthesia during surgery for pain management and other medical requirements.

Highlighting the challenges of assessing a patient’s neurological condition while under anaesthesia, he noted that neuro-monitoring enables surgeons to observe internal physiological changes when patients are unable to communicate what they are experiencing.

Elaborating on the technology, Dr. Zaidhan explained that during brain surgery to remove a tumour, for instance, the neuro-monitoring system alerts the surgical team as they approach the tumour while the patient is under anaesthesia.

The system works by connecting the patient to neuro-monitoring equipment through small pins, which transmit physiological data from within the body to the medical team.

According to Dr. Zaidhan, the technology significantly reduces the risk of paralysis during surgery while helping protect the brain, spinal cord and nerves.

ADK Hospital performed its first two surgeries using neuro-monitoring on July 16 and 17, 2023. Subsequently, in May this year, doctors successfully removed a significant portion of a tumour at the hospital using the technology.

Dr. Zaidhan added that a permanent neuro-monitoring system was established at the hospital this month to support the continued expansion of the service.
