Parliament approves five members for CIC

Parliament has approved the 5 members who had scored the most points from the committee review, to be appointed to the Customs Integrity Commission (CIC) today.

The Parliament had initially received 12 nominees from the president. The names were then forwarded to the Parliamentary Committee on Economic Affairs who reviewed them, awarded scores, and had recently forwarded 8 nominees to the parliament floor for vote. Customs Act, ratified on the 11th of May 2011 stipulates that a five-member Customs Integrity Commission is to be established.

The five members approved by the parliament today are: Vizad Ali of H. Aazadevaadhee, Yousuf Maaniu Mohamed of G. Atha, Jihad Anees of Gaafu Alif Kanduhulhudhoo Bluerose, Fareesha Adam of Male’ Dhaftharu, and Fathimath Shamveela of G. Ali Aabaadh.

The names were asked for vote in descending order of the points they had received. As the first five names approved by the parliament, the last remaining 3 names proposed to the floor was not asked for a vote.

The candidates Abdulla Shinah of G. Bilalge, Abdulla Nisam and Aishath Shiuna of H. Baraboamaage were not asked for vote.

The monthly salary of a CIC member is MVR 32,500. They will also be allowed MVR 1000 as a monthly phone allowance, and MVR 10,000 as annual premium. The monthly salaries for President and Vice President of the Commission are higher, totalling MVR 37,500 and MVR35,500 respectively. The total annual pay for each member calculates to MVR 412,000 excluding the President and Vice President, who will receive an MVR 472,000 and MVR 448,000 respectively.
