Person sentenced to 8 years imprisonment for stabbing foreigner

Criminal Court has sentenced a man to eight years in prison after being convicted of stabbing a foreigner in the neck.

Siyan Haadhee of Ma. Maajehi Villa was convicted for attacking a foreigner, an incident that happened during June last year.

Criminal Court's sentence today stated that it was proven to the court that Siyan Haadhee had stabbed Riton, a Bangladeshi citizen, in the neck while he was standing in front of M. Veliraalhufushi along with two others, at around 12:45 am on the night of the 11th of May 2012.

Siyan was sentenced to 8 years in prison under the prohibition of intimidation and possession of dangerous weapons act.

“Let it be declared that Siyan Haadhee of Ma. Maajehi Villa has been convicted of attacking with a sharp object, and as [taking into account that] this is first of such a conviction made against this person, in reference to Article 2 (c), under Article 2 (e) of the probation of intimidation and possession of dangerous weapons and sharp objects act, [which carries] a sentence of seven years, and one year under the Article 2 (f) of same Act, we sentence Siyan Haadhee of Ma. Maajehi Villa to serve a total of eight years in prison, and hence this case is closed,” read the Criminal Court sentence.

While a number of stabbings had taken place in Male’ last year, this is the first such case that has resulted in a conviction.
