Maldives pledges MVR 1M to Nepal PM’s Disaster Relief Fund to support flood recovery

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has pledged MVR 1 million to the Nepal Prime Minister’s Disaster Relief Fund to support ongoing relief, recovery and humanitarian efforts following the devastating floods and landslides that struck Nepal on August 26, 2026.

According to the President’s Office, the contribution underscores the Maldives’ commitment to regional solidarity and its longstanding belief in the importance of nations standing together with compassion and mutual support during times of crisis.

President Dr Muizzu expressed his deepest sympathies to the Government and people of Nepal over the loss of lives and extensive destruction caused by the disaster, reaffirming the Maldives’ solidarity with the Nepalese people during this challenging period.

The Maldives and Nepal, both South Asian countries, have maintained warm and cordial relations since establishing diplomatic ties in 1980. The President’s Office affirmed Maldives’ committment to further strengthening these longstanding relations and providing support to countries across the region in times of need.

Flooding along the China-Nepal border has killed at least 1,308 people, with more than 5,600 others still missing, according to Nepalese authorities and Chinese state media.

Following the incident, President Muizzu conveyed his condolences to Nepal’s Prime Minister, Balendra Shah. In his message, the President expressed profound sorrow over the loss of numerous lives and the extensive damage caused by the disaster.

The President extended his deepest sympathies to the families of those who lost their lives and wished a speedy recovery to those injured. He also commended the tireless efforts of emergency response teams working at the scene.
